OUR STORY

First Generation Family farm

Our family farm started out as most do, in the back yard containing chickens and turkeys with a dream of being sustainable within our own family. As most dreams do, it grew into your neighborhood urban farm. We have always believed in being a steward of the land and tread lightly in our footprint. We glean produce from a local grocery store to feed the animals, which reduces waste in the landfill and source locally at Excel Mill in Tacoma. 

Our family farm processes the poultry grown on the farm ourselves.Our lamb and pork are also processed right here on the farm, with humane practices and skilled professionals. 

And not to mention, we eat our product as well! So we want ethical and sustainable meat for our family as well!

ABOUT BRIGHT SPELLS FARM

We are considered to be an Urban Farm, located in the outskirts of Tacoma.

We are a small family farm that processes our poultry and livestock ON the farm! So all of our animals never have the stress of transport. We believe quality is key in how an animal is raised and support this by raising and processing right here on the farm. They all get to forage rotationally on the acreage, as nature intended it, eating bugs and grass and breathing fresh air! We supplement them with feed from a local mill right here in Tacoma, as well as a local grocery store of spent produce. They get a nice variety of feed and we know the flavor of our products are supreme! This means your farm products from us have nutritional content and a better flavor than anything you can buy in the store. We NEVER feed any hormones, antibiotics or any chemical additives.

The Poultry we raise here are Heritage Turkeys, which are closest relative to the wild turkey with a smaller carcass weigh of 10-19lbs, with a darker meat. We also raise Broad Breasted Turkey, which is a commercial bird, the same as your grocery store would have. Except they are grown ON PASTURE! These typically weigh between 12-29lbs, with larger breast meat and more of a white meat. We raise our Poultry on a Seasonal calendar. This is Turkey in November(typically the weekend before Thanksgiving). This means they are NEVER frozen! Your Holiday will have THE BEST TURKEY on the table! Your family will talk about this amazing Turkey forever!

We also raise a breed called Cornish Cross Chicken, called Broilers. These are typically raised ON PASTURE in batches, Spring through Fall.These are sold as a Whole bird, in which you can cook or part out in your own home. We do NOT freeze our birds, so you are getting fresh as off the farm Chicken!

We raise Katahdin hair Sheep, this is a milder tasting lamb than your grocery store variety.They forage on pasture, eat local produce and occasionally have some locally milled grain. 

We also raise a heritage breed Gloucestershire Old Spot that we also feed a NO SOY grain, local produce and they forage on pasture naturally eating what pigs do! 

Our Lamb and Pork is sold "on the hoof", which means you are sold a half share or a whole share. You decide how it is cut at the local butcher.
